Upgrading from Ideas Genie to Ideas
Genie Pro Issue date
7th July 2007
You need a License Number
to Register Ideas Genie Pro. The licence number is NOT the same as Ideas Genie.
You also need an Internet connection. If you don’t have an internet connection,
please email for assistance (see contact details on the About us link at the bottom of this screen)
If you do not have a
license, take the link at the top of the screen to find order details and
current prices. Your contribution to this great project will be much
appreciated.
Requirements
for this upgrade:
1) An Ideas Genie Pro installation CD
2) Ideas Genie Pro installed using the installation CD.
3) Ideas Genie installed on the same computer
What the
upgrade does
Step 3 will copy your Ideas Genie files into the new Ideas Genie Pro folder.
Using a special program, Step 9 will install special files from the IG Pro CD.
Using the same special program, Step 10 will use these special files to convert
your Ideas Genie data into Ideas Genie Pro format.
Please note: The upgrade is only necessary if you have data in Ideas Genie.
Some reassuring notes
There is no risk!
However, there’s such a thing as sods law.
Hence, for peace of mind, please do a backup of your Ideas Genie files before
performing the upgrade.
The upgrade procedure has been developed to ensure you don’t lose your valuable
data in Ideas Genie by performing this upgrade.
In fact, you’ll have a dual system. Both Ideas Genie AND Ideas Genie Pro will
be fully functional.
You may continue to use Ideas Genie if you wish.
If it goes horribly wrong, you can uninstall Ideas Genie Pro and start again,
no harm done.
Performing
the Upgrade
Step 1
Make sure all the
requirements for the upgrade have been made (see 1-3 above)
Step 2
Start Ideas Genie (NOT Ideas Genie Pro)
Run
the option System > System Paths–
GA197 from the Ideas Genie
menu.
Click the “Get a directory” button associated with
the “Alternate System backup path”.
It’s the one near the bottom
of the screen.
Paste the following line into
the field:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\IDEASFORGARDENS\IFG_IGP\
Note: This assumes you
accepted the default folder offered when you installed Ideas Genie Pro.
Click
the Save Changes buton
Step 3
Do a backup to the “Alternate System Backup” folder, as configured above in the
Ideas Genie system.
Heres how:
Run the option System
> Backups– GA201 from the
Ideas Genie menu.
Change
the “Backup to” folder to “Alternate backup directory”
(Make sure the Backup Folder Name is the same as that configured in Step 2
above)
Click “Do Test”
Click “Step 3 Continue Backup”
Screen GA201S02 appears
Click on the “Do backup” button
Click the escape button when the backup finishes.
Step
4
Exit from Ideas Genie
Step 5
Close
all applications
If the Ideas Genie Pro CD is already in the drive, jump to Step 6
If NOT, Insert the Ideas Genie Pro CD into the CD drive.
It will make things easier if you use your d: drive if you have a choice of CD
drives.
The auto installer will begin.
Click Cancel
Step 6
Start
Ideas Genie Pro
Run the option System
> Special– GA901 from the
Ideas Genie Pro menu.
Screen GA901S41 appears
Make sure the Header text in the screen reads:
Ideas Genie – Upgrade to Version 4 (Pro)
Step 7
There are 2 fields in this screen.
Both fields should contain the correct path names and should NOT need changed.
The caption for the first field in screen GA901S41 reads:
”Select the Ideas Genie Pro folder on CD”
The first field should contain:
d:\program
files\ideasforgardens\ifg_igp\
If your CD drive IS d: and you HAVE your CD inserted in the d: drive, then jump
to step 8
Not sure?
Jump to step 9 and try it.
If it works, happy days!
If it doesn’t, the program GA901S41 will tell you that you don’t have the right
folders.
In that event, no harm will be done.
If you KNOW your CD drive with the Ideas Genie Pro installation CD is NOT d: then
you
must find the ifg_igp folder on the Ideas Genie Pro installation CD as follows:
Click the first “Get a directory” button (associated with the caption and field
discussed in this step)
In the dialog box which appears, change the “Drive” pop up (at the bottom of
the dialog box) to match the
drive where you have the Ideas Genie Pro installation CD
Navigate to “Program files”
then to “ideasforgardens”
Then
to “ifg_igp”
Click
the “Select” button
Screen GA902S41 will reappear. The folder you selected will appear in the text
field.
Reassurance:
You will be prevented from selecting an invalid folder.
Step 8
The caption for the second field in GA901S41 reads:
”Select the Ideas Genie Pro folder on YOUR computer”
The second field should contain:
.\
In words – dot backslash
If it does then jump to step 9
If it doesn’t, then please abort this upgrade and contact me by email on ask@ideasforgardens.com
Step 9
Perform Step 1 as shown in screen GA901S41 by clicking the “Copy files from CD”
button
You will get a message when that step finishes.
Step 10
Perform Step 2 as shown in screen GA901S41 by clicking the “Start the Upgrade”
button
You will get a message when that step finishes.
Step 11
Job
done!
Exit from Ideas Genie Pro (as you may get an error if you try to run programs)
Step 12
Restart
Ideas Genie Pro
Run some programs. Check that your plants and specimens have been transferred
into Ideas Genie Pro, and that your photos are linked.
Any problems whatsoever, please let me know by email on ask@ideasforgardens.com
